North Somerset Athletic Club is run by volunteers, without whom the club would not be able to provide the opportunity for our athletes to train, compete, make new friends and have some fun.
We are always looking for additional hands to help out; contact us now and let us know how you could also contribute
Our volunteers come from all walks of life, have families, their own career and work responsibilities and children who are also members – and freely give their time and lend their experience to manage a great, award-winning club.
Here’s how you can volunteer, all of which are rewarding experiences in their own right:
Athletics & Running Coaches
Officials & Competition Support
Helping Out at Training
Join the Committee
There are two primary routes supported by England Athletics to qualify as a coach.
Athletics Coach
The stepping stone for an athletics coaching qualification is to acquire an Assistant Coaching licence; this can then be upgraded to a Full Coaching licence and with options for specialist qualifications in Track & Field events.
Running Fitness
Geared more towards endurance and longer distance running, such as cross country, these licences comes in two options: Leader in Running Fitness (LiRF) and Coach in Running Fitness (CiRF).
The club sponsors members and parents who wish to acquire a qualification; further information on coaching is available at the England Athletics website, including the pathway graphic shown below.
Join our coaching team by contacting our Head Coach directly or complete our online form.
Our athletes would not be able to compete in regular League or Open Meetings without the support of officials and team managers.
Officiating at Competions
England Athletics has a structured approach to becoming a qualified official, starting out as Assistant Official and then a series of Levels from One to Four. These cover everything from acting as a marshall, to time-keeping and measuring throwing distances.
The club will sponsor those who wish to become a qualified official; full details on the qualification pathway are available at the England Athletics website.
Qualify as an Official by either contacting our Officials Coordinator (Cathryn Boylen) directly, or drop us a line via our our online contact form.
Team Management
No qualifications required here!
Team Managers help the Head Coach sort out which members are available to compete in which track and field events at League Meetings. Teams are organised by age group (i.e. U12 through to Senior athletes) and by gender.
This role would suit a parent whose child/children regularly compete for the club, ensuring members of the team they are looking after know what they are doing and where they should be going on the day of the event.
Help out as Team Manager either by contacting our Head Coach directly, or use the same online form.
Our coaches time at training sessions is most effective when they are able to concentrate on what they do best – coaching our members.
To do this the club relies on parents/guardians helping out at training sessions with things like registering athletes, organising toilet breaks and setting up equipment.
To assist our coaching team, speak to the Lead Coach at the training session(s) attended by your child/children, or express your interest now using our online contact form.
The club does not run itself, it requires a team of dedicated volunteers behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly.
As an affiliated club to England Athletics, some committee roles are mandatory, such as a Chair, Club Secretary, Lead Welfare Officer and Treasurer.
In addition, there are other supporting roles from coordinating officials to membership administration, registration of members with England Athletics, assisting with marketing and maintaining social media platforms and running our website.
Could you contribute to the running of the club?
If so, we’ve love to hear from you – drop us a line via our online contact form.
